Tekmar awarded Innogy’s Triton Knoll cable protection by Boskalis

Tekmar Energy are pleased to announce that Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) have selected the patented TekLink® Cable Protection System (CPS) Generation 8 for the Innogy Triton Knoll offshore wind farm (OWF).

Triton Knoll is located 32 kilometres off the coast of Lincolnshire and consists of 90 turbines in water depth of 15-21m. The project will provide a total of 860 MW providing sustainable renewable energy to over 800,000 homes in the UK when complete.

Russell Edmondson, Managing Director of Tekmar Energy said: “We are delighted to continue our trusted relationship with Boskalis following many years of success together. Further, this is our third project with Innogy following the completion of Galloper late last year, also with Boskalis.”

For the project Tekmar will be providing 196 systems for protecting the array and export cables; bellmouths for the substations; with sister company AgileTek Engineering performing engineering analysis on the project.

Tekmar will be supplying the latest TekLink® Generation 8 cable protection system which offers reduced cost, improved installation efficiency and is the ultimate subsea protection solution for power cables within offshore wind.

The project will mark Tekmar’s 71st project within the industry, taking Tekmar’s record on being trusted to protect over 24GW of electrical infrastructure worldwide. The product will be produced within Tekmar’s state of the art manufacturing facility in the North East of England.

North East offshore wind cluster ready to deliver on Sector Deal, says Energi Coast

Energi Coast, North East England’s offshore wind cluster, has declared the region’s supply chain ‘fit and ready’ to support the growth of the industry following the announcement of the Sector Deal for the offshore wind industry.

The North East has been instrumental in the development of the offshore wind industry since its inception and developed a diverse cluster of innovative, technology-led suppliers.

Since creating the first offshore wind farm off the coast of Blyth in 2000, the North East supply chain has evolved through the development of innovative and efficient products and services, which have been applied to multiple UK and international wind farms.

As a result, the cluster has matured to be able to deliver every element for building an offshore wind farm, ranging from foundations, design, cables and cable laying. It also has extensive port facilities and is home to a number of companies providing Operation & Maintenance support offshore wind farms.

Founded in 2011 by energy sector business development experts NOF, Energi Coast champions the North East’s innovative and collaborative offshore renewables supply chain companies.

Tekmar selected for Northwester 2

Tekmar Energy are pleased to announce that offshore installation contractor Jan De Nul Group have selected the patented Tekmar Cable Protection System (CPS) TekLink® Mechanical Latch for the Northwester 2 offshore wind farm.

Northwester 2 will be the sixth windfarm in the North Sea off the Belgian coast, consisting of 23 turbines and will provide a total of 219 MW from its location off the coast of Zeebrugge, in water depth of approximately 40m. The project is set for completion in 2020.

The award also continues the success of Tekmar in the region, after being selected for several adjacent windfarms including Belwind, Belwind demonstration, Thornton Bank 2 and 3 and Borselle 1,2,3 and 4.

As part of the project, Tekmar will be supplying their latest TekLink® Generation 8 cable protection system for all inter array and export cables.

AgileTek Engineering, fellow Tekmar Group company, also supported the project using its proprietary AEL cloud system, providing verification of the cable protection system design via global analysis of the cables and CPS on the project.

The product will be produced within Tekmar’s state of the art manufacturing facility in the North East of England during 2019.

Van Oord select Tekmar for Borssele 2

Tekmar Energy are pleased to announce that international marine contractor Van Oord has selected the patented Tekmar Cable Protection System (CPS) TekLink® Mechanical Latch for the Borssele 2 (site III and IV) offshore wind farm.

Borssele 2 consisting of 77 turbines and a total of 731.5 MW, will go into construction off the coast of Zeeland, the Netherlands in 2020.

This continues our trusted relationship together following the successful award from Van Oord for Deutsche Bucht and BorWin3 earlier in 2018, and continues our success on Borssele following the award of Borssele I and II by Ørsted in July.”

Renewable UK interview with Jack Simpson

Can you say a few words about Tekmar and its business operations?

Tekmar is a market leading provider of subsea protection technology for the global offshore energy market. We are most well-known for our cable protection systems (CPS), which protect the subsea power cables as they enter and exit offshore wind turbine foundations.

You supplied cable protection systems to the first 66kV wind farm at the Blyth Demonstrator project. Can you describe any key challenges and learnings that you faced with regards to working on this higher voltage cable?

66kV cables were new to Tekmar and the whole industry before the Blyth Demonstrator project. The new cable technology had however undergone significant testing and verification before going offshore, with manufacturers such as Nexans and JDR now have fully type tested 66kV cables which naturally leads to a greater degree of confidence. For Tekmar we carried out a full verification of our CPS to ensure that our systems would protect these new cables for the full 25-year service life. We were delighted that the project was very successful, proving not only the new cable designs, but also the innovative Gravity Base foundation. Since then Tekmar have gone onto supplying CPS on two further 66kV projects; Aberdeen Offshore Windfarm and East Angila ONE.

What are your views on projects selecting 66kV cables?

We see this as a very positive step for the future of offshore wind, one which supports the overall cost reduction of future projects.

Do you think that more projects will be selecting 66kV cables? What would be the main reasons for selecting this option?

Yes, as turbines get larger and more powerful it makes more and more sense to select 66kV over the traditional 33kV. If you double the voltage, you double the power meaning you can have more turbines (MW’s) in a string. More turbines in a string means less links back to the substation, which results in overall less cable length required and reduced cost.

You undertook work on the Formosa 1 Phase 1 project in Taiwan. Can you explain the work that you undertook for this project?

Tekmar executed the full design, engineering, testing, training and manufacturing scope for CPS on the Formosa 1 Phase 1 project. We did this in line with the proven methods we use from over 60 Offshore Windfarm projects in Europe.

What challenges did you face with regards to winning this work in a country that has just begun the development of its offshore wind sector?

In Taiwan our customer was new to Offshore Wind and CPS. We provided a lot of guidance and best practice, working closely with the domestic cable installer Woen Jinn Harbour to support in the installation of the CPS. The installation of the CPS was a great success.

Apart from Taiwan, do you see any other countries that are now entering the offshore wind sector that will require your services?

Yes, Tekmar is very excited for the future of Offshore Wind as it becomes truly globalised, and more than just as a means of decarbonisation. With the significant cost reduction seen over the last few years, it becomes as much of an economic decision than an environmental one. Outside of Europe, Tekmar have already delivered to projects in the USA, China, Taiwan and South Korea.

Cable faults for offshore windfarms can account for great financial losses for developers. In your view, why are these faults occurring and what can be done to reduce the occurrence of failures?

When an industry is new, it’s not uncommon for mistakes to be made and lessons to be learned. However, Offshore Wind has now been going for a number of years and with over 22GW of capacity installed globally, there is an ever-increasing understanding of risk areas and the best way to do things. New guidelines have also been written to capture some of this best practice, such as the DNVGL-RP-0360 which Tekmar participated in. However if a cable failure does occur, what is key is a timely repair as one of the biggest costs is not the repair but in fact the lost revenue. A quicker repair will lead to reduced losses to the developers. We have seen companies such as Boskalis and DeepOcean make big steps in this area with their repair initiatives which shows the industry is evolving.

Do you have any further comments or insights about the offshore wind cables market that you would like to add?

In addition to the globalisation of the Offshore Wind project locations, we have seen further globalisation of supply chain. European manufacturers (such as Tekmar and JDR) suppling into Asia, and Asian manufacturers suppling into Europe. This leads to an increase in global knowledge sharing, as well as increased competition which in turn can lead to reducing overall cost. It is however key to ensure quality is maintained and “true cost” is always considered.

North East Energy Companies Lead The Way

Companies from Energi Coast, the representative cluster group for the North East of England’s offshore renewables supply chain, hosted a best practise knowledge sharing event Thursday 11 October.

The event hosted at DeepOcean’s new facility in Blyth, was aimed at a technical audience of developers and supply chain and focussed on sharing experience across every stage of a subsea cable project, from design through to installation.

With presentations from Tekmar Energy, DeepOcean, Modus, AgileTek, Cathie Associates, JDR Cables and Royal IHC, the event covered a range of topics including Front End Engineering Design (FEED), manufacture and installation, to operations, maintenance and repair.

James Ritchie, Tekmar Group plc CEO and Energi Coast Chairman, said: “It was a special event aimed at educating industry partners through a series of knowledge-based presentations focusing on industry challenges and how we can address these together. Attendees included seasoned professionals and graduates alike, and provided a platform to share best practise from across the complete supply chain and highlight synergies between our respective companies.”

Jonathan Edwards, Business Development Director at DeepOcean said: “It was fantastic to welcome so many industry key players to our new facility and host this day of best practise. With over 90 attendees, including developers from Orsted and Vattenfall, the event was a great success.”

The event was held at DeepOcean’s Offshore Services Base Blyth, a state-of the art facility, purpose built to support the planning, preparation, mobilisation and maintenance of DeepOcean’s sophisticated subsea trenching assets and vessel fleet.

Follow up events are already planned to continue supporting collaborative working within the industry and highlight the North East of England as a centre of excellence for the offshore sector.

Double Win for Tekmar

It was a double win for Tekmar at the Insider Media North East Dealmakers Awards 2018, with the Tekmar Group IPO named as ‘Deal of the Year’ and James Ritchie, CEO of Tekmar Group plc named as Entrepreneur of the Year.

James Ritchie said: “It was a great night and I was truly humbled by the awards, although it was really all down to my fantastic team. Thank you all.”

James joined the business in 2008 as Tekmar Energy’s first employee. In 2011 James led the management buyout of Tekmar Energy with Elysian Capital, becoming chief executive in the process. James masterminded the AIM flotation of Tekmar with his enthusiastic entrepreneurial spirit. The deal completed in June 2018.

The Tekmar IPO listed shares with a market capitalisation of about £65m, following a successful total fundraise of approximately £62m. The deal is the first full AIM UK flotation in the region since 2014 and the proceeds of the placing will provide the resources to fund Tekmar’s future expansion and acquisitions.

Tekmar Energy Ltd first offshore company to receive ISO 45001 accreditation

Tekmar Energy (Tekmar®) a market leading technology provider of protection systems for subsea cable, umbilical and flexible pipes and offshore engineering services, are pleased to announce the successful transition to ISO 45001:2018.

ISO 45001:2018 is an International Standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, to enable organisations to proactively improve its OH&S performance in preventing injury and ill-health. 

The team received the news from DNV GL that Tekmar are the first company in the North East of England to achieve the certification, but also the first offshore & manufacturing company in the UK to be recommended for ISO 45001:2018, which is a huge credit to the team.

HSQE manager Rob McGill said, “It has been a busy and exciting year at Tekmar and the results are visible. We are so proud of this recognition. Achieving this milestone gives our customers confidence that we are committed to the continual improvement in Health and Safety and that Tekmar are leading the way in the industry.”
